When we moved to West Virginia from Colorado, we realized there are lots of amazing places in our area. Some have amazing views, some have epic waterfalls, some have both of course. There is so much beauty! Here are some of our top spots in the state to have an adventure elopement or intimate wedding.
DOLLY SODS WILDERNESS
Dolly Sods is one of our favorite places for elopements + intimate weddings and honestly just to explore. There are so many trails and beautiful overlooks and it’s really beautiful all the time.
Pros:
- There are tons of trails
- Some of the trails don’t need a ton of hiking
- A beautiful location
- It’s more remote, but there are many different access points and roads to get to it.
- More intimate
CONS:
- Can take longer to travel to for your day
- Less accessible for those who aren’t as mobile
- It can get really busy during certain times of year
- Parking can be difficult during busy times
- It can be really MUDDY, but that is part of the fun
- Can be more difficult to get vendors, especially on busy days of the year
BLACKWATER FALLS STATE PARK
Blackwater Falls is an amazing spot for an elopement or intimate wedding. It’s super easy to reserve the ceremony locations and plan an elopement or intimate wedding in the park and it has so many spots for epic photos.
Pros:
- There are lots of trails with different views
- Some of the trails don’t need a ton of hiking
- A beautiful location
- It’s easier to get to via travel
- Easy to book a ceremony spot
- Cheaper than standard venues in the area
CONS:
- Can get busy during Fall
- Can be less intimate at the more visited spots in the park
- It can get really busy during certain times of year
- Parking can be difficult during busy times
- It can be really MUDDY, but that is part of the fun
Canaan Valley Area
Canaan Valley area is great for elopements + intimate weddings. It’s beautiful and has a lot of different terrain around since there are many places that are a part of the Monongahela National Forest and Blackwater Falls and there is access to Dolly Sods Wilderness in certain areas.
Pros:
- There are beautiful overlooks
- Some of the trails don’t need a ton of hiking
- Easier to access and travel to
- Lots of lodging options
- Still intimate in most areas
CONS:
- Can take a little longer for travel on your day depending on where you stay and where your ceremony will be
- Less accessible for those who aren’t as mobile on. the longer trails
- It can get really busy during certain times of year (FALL)
- Lack of cell service in a lot of the area so planning is really important if you have guests
- Parking can be difficult during busy times
HONORABLE
LOCATIONS
Spruce Knob/Seneca Rocks Area
Spruce Knob is great for elopements. It’s gorgeous has some of the prettiest views, especially at sunset.
New River Gorge Area
There are so many trails and gorgeous views. Perfect for those who want to adventure, camp, hike and so much more!
Huntington Area
A beautiful location that is easily accessible and has lots of places to adventure (including Ritter Park and the rose garden).
REASONS TO

SAVE SOME MONEY
House rentals in the area aren’t too expensive at all and there are many options. Also, there are other ways to have a cheaper wedding with the right vendors in the area.
BEAUTIFUL LOCATIONS
There are so many beautiful views and trails in West Virginia to elope at with you and your love and your most important loved ones.
MORE INTIMATE
There are lot of more remote locations to have a more intimate experience. Sometimes you won’t see anyone on the trails, which is awesome!
MORE ADVENTUROUS
You can fill your day and weekend with more adventure than many other locations. Whitewater rafting, kayaking, SUPing, swimming, hiking trails, camping, and more! There are so many options.
